Invitation to Gender Based Violence Intervention Product by Hong Leong Foundation

This afternoon, we are invited to attend a seminar by Dr. Nandini Azad, Member Secretary from the Independent Commission for People’s Rights and Development in New Delhi, India, hosted by Hong Leong Foundation at the Training room at Wisma Hong Leong. This seminar was attended by varous NGOs & Corporation who has work related to women.

Gender Based Violence Intervention Product in Micro Finance is a unique innovation to enhance women from lower income backgrounds’ overall empowerment and independence. GBV here have been addressed via local platforms of male youth forums with women Microcredit groups. GBV intervention is the short term strategy whereas the long term strategy is to promote easy loaning / linking women to micro credit organisations. The project aims to create an enabling environment by community awareness e.g. cultural activism through street theatre and training / capacity building on GBV / microfinance issues.

Personally I have learned so much from Dr Nandini, particularly engaging young men/youth in creating awareness about GBV through street theatre. Besides that, ways of drawing local MPs to participate in this endeavour. The session ended with a fellowship dinner at the Golden Phoenix Restaurant in Equatorial Hotel.

Visit By Hong Leong Foundation to our Mini Library Program

Last tuesday 09/09/08, Sue from Hong Leong foundation visited our mini library. She commented that our mini library was really cosy and well organised. I am grateful to Hong Leong foundation for sponsoring us this mini library and as a result over 100 children from Sentul can benefit from it. This will definitely inculcate the habit of reading among children from the poorer community.
